Major Duties:
-- Learn the rules and regulations for NCAA and NIRSA regarding the sport being refereed.
-- Offer fair, unbiased decisions in the sport being refereed.
-- Provide leadership and positive representation for the Intramural Program and the Student Affairs Department.
-- Provide expertise in the sport at hand.
-- Assist with training referees in the sport at hand.
-- Attend all scheduled games of the sport at hand; not as a player, solely in a leadership role.
-- Attend scheduled meetings with all intramural directors.
-- Assist intramural directors and Dir of Rec Life with care of intramural fields during academic year including filling of holes, making necessary repairs, placing yard lines and foul lines for all intramural sports.
-- Must be able to provide good judgment and leadership in tense and competitive situations.
-- Attend required trainings, planning sessions and meetings for sport being refereed.
-- Provide a positive and honest attitude to all Intramural participants, referees and directors.
-- Provide representation for the Intramural program with the utmost dignity.
-- Provide equipment set up and take down.
-- Attend all intramural team sports contests. In the event of concurrent games, rotate between games.
-- Arrive at intramural event minimum of 15 minutes prior to start time making sure all equipment and officials are in order.
-- Ensure officials have been secured for sports under director’s responsibility.
-- Ensure officials know their schedules in advance.
-- Educate officials on procedure to follow to ensure payment for services will be made.
-- Control attitude problems of players or officials that may develop during intramural game.
-- Record all point totals for each sport and report to Director of Intramurals and Fitness Center within one week after the sport is completed.
-- Keep track of intramural equipment assigned to sports under director’s responsibility.
-- Avoid academic class conflicts which interfere with sports for which director is responsible.
-- Referee on as needed basis.
-- Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
-- Have knowledge of the methods and techniques of organizing groups into teams and leagues for various athletic and sports activities
-- Understanding of the basic sport, game, or activity being refereed.
-- Be mature.
-- Be respectful of your intramural counterparts.
-- Control situations on or around playing fields.
-- Be organized and willing to meet all deadlines associated with intramural program.
-- Possess knowledge of intramural rules and team sports.
-- Be able to answer questions concerning eligibility or clarification of rules.
-- Realize significance of job as Intramural Team Sports Director and reschedule outside conflicts to ensure they do not conflict with intramural responsibilities.
Education and Experience:
-- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
-- Prior referee experience a plus, but not required.
-- Two (2) years experience in the sport at hand, either as a player or referee either in high school, college, club athletics or intramural sports.
-- 1+ years experience, on or off campus, in a leadership role preferred (i.e. team captain, referee, student senate, manager, etc.)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee will be required to do the following:
-- Must be able to move up and down playing field/surface.
-- Must be able to project clear instructions vocally.
-- Must be able to lift, push and pull 35 pounds.
