Transcultural Experiences

The MSN curriculum allows all students to broaden their horizons and experience other cultures and populations. A variety of opportunities are offered every year. Courses such as NUR 5307 Applying Best Practices and NUR 5306 Global Culture and Health include practicum experiences to ensure that the student increases their cultural competence. These learning options allow the student to experience another culture and to think more globally about nursing and health.

NUR 5307 Applying Best Practices

Students work with the homeless and economically disadvantaged populations within the local community. Experiences at Carpenter’s Church and Lubbock Impact helps the student to gain insight into providing health care for these populations. 90 practicum hours

NUR5306 - Global Culture and Health

Students and faculty travel to a selected country to experience the spiritual dimension of health care delivery, nursing education, and the role of nurses. The course offers a transcultural experience outside the United States. Learning takes place through observation, experience, interaction, and critical thinking via on-site visits and by reviewing current nursing and general literature. The course is designed to enhance the development of critical thinking and communication skills at on-site locations. University faculty and resource persons in the selected country will make arrangements for the desired experiences. Some trips are service oriented and others are more for the cultural experience. 90 practicum hours

Europe and the Mediterranean- Dr. Beverly Byers

Excursions are offered several times a year, exploring countries such as France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, Vienna, and Prague just to name a few. These transcultural experiences involve a look at people, history, culture and the community. Students observe the health of the population through this immersion. Knowledge is gained in observations, tours of health facilities and guest lectures from health professionals practicing in the communities when available.

Kenya - Dr. LaNell Harrison

In early summer graduate students will be able to participate in a service learning trip to Malindi, Kenya. Students will provide health education to the community and instruction to local nurses. Students will have the unique opportunity to be immersed in the African culture of Kenya. A strong emphasis is placed on the holistic practice of nursing including mind, body and spirit.

Honduras - Dr. Cindy Ford 

Each Spring and Fall graduate students are eligible to participate in a service trip providing health education, health screening and cultural immersion with the people of southern Honduras. There is a strong emphasis on missions as the group displays God's love through provision of supplies for health and hygiene, and attend church services with the people of the communities associated with Mission Lazarus of Choluteca, Honduras.

Holy Land - Dr. JoAnn Long

Travel to the Holy land and experience the spiritual dimension of health care delivery, nursing education, and the role of nurses. The course offers a transcultural experience outside the U.S. Learning takes place through observation, experience, interaction, and critical thinking via an expedition that will expose participants to some of what archaeological research in Palestine has brought to light about biblical history and by reviewing current nursing and general literature. The course is designed to enhance the development of critical thinking and communication skills at on-site locations.
