Nature of Social Work
Social work is a profession of licensed individuals with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers are trained to help people cope with daily challenges in their relationships, families, and the community at-large. Social workers advocate for better services, social policy and engage in community development as well as research of social issues.
Social workers value services to others, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence (NASW, 2006).

U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reports:
- Over 595,000 social workers were employed in 2006. The need for social workers is expected to increase by 22% between now and 2016. This increase is faster than the average for all other occupations.

- Medical and public health social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 24% by 2016.
