Personal Info

Originally from the north Dallas area, James is a new student at Texas Tech University where he serves as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Saxophone Studio under the direction of David Dees. He holds degrees in saxophone performance (BM, MM) and composition (BM) from West Texas A&M University, where he studied with Don Lefevre and BJ Brooks. Prior to beginning his studies at Texas Tech, James was a Graduate Assistant for the Saxophone Studio and Jazz Ensembles at West Texas A&M as well as teaching Electronic Music and Jazz Improvisation as an adjunct instructor.

An active performer, James has performed in combined ensembles with the Dallas Wind Symphony, with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, and with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra and Wind Symphony. He was a two-time winner of the WTAMU concerto competition, performing saxophone standards by Ibert and Dubois, a finalist in the Grand Junction Young Artist Competition, and recipient of an Honorable Mention award at MTNA's Texas State Young Artist competition in 2013. In 2012, James was the featured soloist with the West Texas A&M Symphonic Band on their Texas tour, which culminated in a performance of Claude T. Smith's Fantasia for Alto Saxophone at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference. You can also hear him on the WTAMU Percussion Ensemble album, "Home-Grown," performing alongside marimbist David Caballero.

As a commercial musician, James has performed as a regular with Amarillo's Pizzazz Band, Smooth Condition, Thelonious Funk, The Amarillo Little Theatre (Les Misérables, 9 to 5, The Ego Has Landed), Lubbock Moonlight Musicals (A Grand Night for Singing), Las Vegas based show The Rat Pack is Back!, and has performed on stage with The Temptations.

Ever dedicated to education, community, and the development of new music, James has performed in chamber music recitals, public school concerts, nursing home outreach programs, saxophone masterclasses and workshops, and has premiered several new works.

In his free time, James enjoys reading, writing, cooking, playing disc golf, drinking coffee, and spending time with his family and girlfriend, Brianne, and their puppy, Cashew.
