LIVING AND LEARNING AT LCU
Pascarella and Terenzini (1991) suggest that "residential living is positively...linked to increases in aesthetic, cultural, and intellectual values; a liberalizing of social, political, and religious values and attitudes; increases in self-concept, intellectual orientation, autonomy, and independence; gains in tolerance, empathy, and ability to relate to others; persistence in college; and bachelor's degree attainment (p.61).
Additionally, by "applying Astin's theory of involvement...it is clear that by residing on campus, students have greater opportunities to become involved in campus life through leadership opportunities, recreational sports, and cultural activities...The environment created in a campus residence contributes to student learning by providing opportunities for students to experience diversity, be challenged by their peers, and to learn from one another" (Rentz, 284).
What does this mean?
Quite plainly, research suggests that students who live in campus housing have more opportunities to be successful, both in and out of the academic classroom, than students who do not live in campus housing.
On the campus of Lubbock Christian University, Residential Life is an essential component of the overall educational experience. Recent Residential Life initiatives such as full time Residential Life Coordinators, complete facility remodels and continual aesthetic improvements, strategic co-curricular, leadership, and judicial affairs programming, financial incentives, and explicit living/learning objectives has led to more students desiring to live in campus housing than ever before.
