Two Record Setting Graduations for LCUJan. 14, 2013
LUBBOCK, TX --- December 17, 2012 --- Lubbock Christian University granted degrees to 293 graduates during commencement ceremonies over the weekend, setting a record high. Another record was also established – the number of graduate degrees being awarded, with an all-time high of 99.
When the Rip Griffin Center opened in 2001, it was the new home to university athletics and the perfect venue for graduation ceremonies. The first university commencement ceremony held in the facility was in May of 2001. As the university continues to grow, the seating in the Rip Griffin Center has limited the number of guests who can attend, resulting in a need to host multiple graduation ceremonies. Because of the significant growth seen in LCU’s graduate programs, the decision was made in May 2012 to host a separate ceremony for those graduating with Master’s degrees. Forty-one candidates were conferred Master’s degrees in the spring, with a record 99 being awarded this fall.
These were not the first LCU commencement ceremonies for new Lubbock Christian University President, L. Timothy Perrin. As an LCU student, he participated in the ceremony, graduating with honors in 1984. This December marked his first time to preside over the ceremony. Perrin took office June 1 this year. “I’m excited to be a part of the ceremonies – this is a first for me!” said Perrin to a full audience at the undergraduate ceremony.
In a tradition that began several years ago, a distinguished faculty member was selected to deliver the December commencement address. Dr. Don Williams, Director of Graduate Studies and Professor of Theater, addressed Friday’s graduate ceremony. Dr. Stacy Patty, Director of the LCU University Honors program, delivered words of wisdom to undergraduates on Saturday.
