LCU Band Presents Heroes and Villains Kathleen Wyly
Apr. 4, 2014

Lubbock Christian University’s Symphonic Band will perform a concert titled "Heroes and Villains" on Thursday, April 10, at 7:30 pm in the McDonald Moody Auditorium. Director of Bands, Andrew Babcock, says he usually programs a lighter concert for the spring semester to appeal to the audience. As he searched for music he noticed the theme of good vs. evil, which ultimately guided his selections.

“There is something at this concert for everyone,” says Babcock. “Some of the literature is quite sophisticated and some of it will have you humming the melodies.”

Students in the band have their particular favorite song, “Symphonic Suite from Star Wars Episode II: Revenge of the Sith.”

Music major Caleb Blakeney and Ellen Moreno will guest conduct portions of this high energy program, a decision Babcock made simply because they are outstanding music majors.

Ellen Moreno comments, “Our teachers always try to offer us the best opportunities for hands-on experience. This is a large step for me because I have never fully conducted a piece for a band. We’ve put a lot of hard work into it, and we’re excited to present what we’ve done.”

Rehearsal for the “Heroes and Villains” concert have been taking place in the McDonald Moody Auditorium, however, Babcock hopes fall rehearsals can take place in the new band hall that is currently under construction. Renovations on the old Art Complex began last January to house band rehearsals and free up the auditorium for more events. Most of the band students, along with several social clubs, have helped with demolition to lower cost and speed up the process. As renovations progress, students will also take on the responsibilities of painting and decorating the new band hall.

Since the LCU Symphonic Band began five years ago, it has grown in interest and number. With this growth a need for a band hall became apparent. Donations to support ongoing construction of the new band hall will be accepted at Thursday’s concert.
