  Living and Learning at LCU

Welcome to Residential Life at Lubbock Christian University! I am excited that you have chosen campus housing as your new home. Here are a few things that you may not know:

Pascarella and Terenzini (1991) suggest that "residential living is positively...linked to increases in aesthetic, cultural, and intellectual values; a liberalizing of social, political, and religious values and attitudes; increases in self-concept, intellectual orientation, autonomy, and independence; gains in tolerance, empathy, and ability to relate to others; persistence in college; and bachelor's degree attainment” (p.61).

Additionally, by "applying Astin's theory of involvement...it is clear that by residing on campus, students have greater opportunities to become involved in campus life through leadership opportunities, recreational sports, and cultural activities...The environment created in a campus residence contributes to student learning by providing opportunities for students to experience diversity, be challenged by their peers, and to learn from one another" (Rentz, 284).

What does this mean?

Quite plainly, research suggests that students who live in campus housing have more opportunities to be successful, both in and out of the academic classroom, than students who do not!

On the campus of Lubbock Christian University, Residential Life (ResLife) is an essential component of the overall educational experience. The ResLife experience is more than a room in which to sleep or study. It’s about making lifelong friends and discovering who you are. It’s about uncovering your strengths and recognizing your weaknesses. It’s about listening to new points of view and learning the courage to voice your own. It is about discovering who God is, who he has designed you to be, and playing an integral role in a community of individuals who are all making that journey in concert with one another. It is about becoming involved in campus activities. In all, the ResLife experience is about living together and learning together.

Recent Residential Life initiatives such as facility upgrades and continual aesthetic improvements, strategic co-curricular, leadership, and judicial affairs programming, increased academic partnerships, and explicit living/learning objectives have led to more students desiring to live in campus housing than ever before. As an institutional core value, Lubbock Christian University pledges to continue to constantly improve in all areas of Residential Life.

The ResLife Guide located here will assist you as you launch off in your new life adventure. It will provide important contact information, ResLife dates, staff descriptions, frequently asked questions, and important policies and procedures related to community living in the residence halls and campus apartments. For further clarification about this guide or any issue related to campus housing, please contact the Residential Life office and/or a ResLife employee (806-720-7506).

Again, I am grateful that you have chosen to attend Lubbock Christian University and become a part of the Residential Life community! My hope is that by being a part of this community, you will excel academically, grow in character and personal development, take ownership in an amazing community of believers, and own a personal sense of faith, spirituality, and a relationship with God. The ResLife community is here for you; we look forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

Matt Paden, M.S.
