Throughout history, God has called his people to prayer and fasting. Jesus said, “When you fast…,” operating on the assumption that we would practice this discipline among others (Mark 2:20). These practices focus our hearts more fully on God, and they extend his reign more fully over us. If we live apart from God, our lives will be diminished. When we intentionally seek God and honor him, our lives are enriched.
As in years past, we are initiating a focused season of prayer. Below are some focal points for 30 Days of Prayer. If you are willing, you are encouraged to intensify your prayers with fasting. On the day you sign up to pray, you can give up one meal, several meals, or something else meaningful to you.

PRAISE: Intentionally develop thankful hearts.
God continues to be gracious to us. He has blessed us by guiding us through some demanding seasons. It is crucial to have grateful hearts so that God will continue to turn his face towards us. Practice gratitude—avoid complaining. Truly give thanks to God.
PETITION: Understand that our petitions to God are indispensable in bringing his reign more fully to this campus—to this earth.
We increase God’s reign over us when we develop good daily habits by cultivating the traits that attract God’s Holy Spirit:
- Humility—it draws God like a magnet. He will show himself strong to those whose hearts are given to him. (2 Chron. 16:9)
- Holiness—we won’t see God at work among us without it. (Hebrews 12:14)
- Unity—where it is fostered, God pours out his blessing. (Psalm 133:3)
- Faith—God acts astoundingly where faith is exercised. (Mark 11:23)
A prayer:
Father, we give you the place of honor you deserve. Sustain us with your provisions, fill us with your Spirit, and use us as instruments of your grace. Continue to send out workers into the harvest from this campus. Rescue us from the evil one. Father, let your kingdom come more fully to this campus, this city and to the ends of the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
